The quest for the perfect shade of red lipstick

This is one of those never ending searches that just leaves you with tons of information on the way. The perfect red lipstick is like a myth, the holy grail of lipstick land. There’s millions of different types and brands & shades of red lipstick, so finding the perfect one is no simple task. First of all, keep in mind what shade of red goes best with your skin tone. If you have fair skin you should go for a classic red hued lipstick or a red/coral tone and avoid red-pink hues. If you’re like me and have medium toned skin, cranberry red and pink/red hued lipsticks are the way to go, and if you have dark skin a red-orange toned lipstick shade will look best (as illustrated below).

I don’t claim to be an expert on beauty or lipsticks, but I have been wearing lipstick since I was little(altough, not as fabulously) and had the best beauty teachers, my moms, ma’ grandma & my sister (who, by the way always has in her handbag more than 3 lipsticks at the same time, what for? Who knows) ,3 fabulous ladies that never leave their houses without makeup on (only to workout, mind you; if they do workout). So I took it upon myself to research and ask my friends & their friends for that perfect red lipstick. What’s the perfect red lipstick? Whichever one looks best on YOU, So pucker up!

Of course my list will start with my favorites

1.MAC Ruby Woo

Somehow I keep buying this lipstick in bulk. It has a matte finish. I’ve tried other red lipsticks before but this one stuck. This is the kind of shade of red that will stay on you the day after wearing it, even after taking it off. Also, most of my friends have this lipstick as their favorite (maybe is a Puertorican thing). It is not creamy nor smooth, it’s kind of on the dry side, but it does not crack or feel like petrified on my lips. Definitely not for the faint of heart

2. NARS Babe Lipgloss

This glossy red orange lipgloss is perfect for when you want to wear red lipstick in the daytime or at work. Its give just a pop of color in those blah days. This is the kind of lipstick that looks good on anyone.

3.Chanel Aqualumiere Lipgloss 78 Cherry Blossom

I always have this lipgloss in my bag and I always take it with me when I travel. I am a lawyer, and this is the kind of red I wear when going to court, glossy, bright, but not “in your face” red. I also wear this whenever I’m tanned ‘cuz it just gives me that extra glimmer. It’s shade is more of a pinkish red.

4.Chanel Levres Scintillantes Brillant Extreme Glossimer Lipgloss 217 Red Shine

This is my mom’s go to red lipgloss. She wears it indistinctively, wether is day or night. She’s had this lipstick for as long as I can remember. It’s super glossy & shiny, and very red. My mom says she “feels sexy” when she wears this lipstick….(TMI)

The next red lipsticks are my friends favorites( in no particular order) and the descriptions of the lipsticks are the ones they made. FYI my friends all have different skin tones, and styles, so this list has a wide range of different shades and tones of red lipstick.

5.L.Z ‘s favorite red lipstick:Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture 201

-“It’s my favorite because it’s very long lasting. Its a shade of red that’s not that intense and has a matte finish. If I need it to be shiny, I justs apply some clear lipgloss and voila!”

6.D.V ‘s favorite red lipstick:Too Faced Runway Red

“It’s my favorite because its long lasting, it is always glossy. The color is a rare red tone; its a darker shade of red, but with raspberry red undertones at the same time.”

“It is blood red colored lipstick, & it looks very good with my complexion when I’m not tanned and very pale. I don’t have to retouch every 2 seconds and it has a creamy matte finish.”

10.V.J’s favorite red lipstick: NARS Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencil in Dragon Girl.

“I like it because it has a matte finish, but is very creamy and moisturizing at the same time, and it is long lasting on my lips.”

11. G.B’s favorite red lipstick:Wet n Wild Mega Last Lip Color in 911D Spotlight Red

12.L.V’s favorite red lipstick: MAC Dangerous

“It has a matte finish, and its a dark orange red tone. I have tried others, this is my favorite.”

13.F.S’s favorite red lipstick: Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate-111 Kiss of Life

“I really like this lipstick because it’s very smooth and has a matte finish; I use it a lot. It’s shade is like a red lip stain. Love the quality and the bargain price.”
